Monthly Clinic Specials - Don't Forget Father's Day!

Hello Friends,

Well I feel like I only typed this the other day!  Actually I did, took 3 hours and then my computer crashed!  Good on computers, sometimes you love em sometimes you just want to throw the stupid things off a very high roof!  Think I need a massage!

It was a very exciting and adventurous month for us, well especially me!  On my flight to Roma last month I was beginning to wonder whether I was ever going to get there.  After 3 attempts to land in Roma due to low cloud cover, our plane was diverted to Charleville.  We finally landed after the second attempt and we were given the option of a 3-4 hour bus ride back to Roma or a chance to fly back with the possibility of heading back to Brisbane if the weather didn't clear up.  I took my chance and boarded the plane as I couldn't think of anything worse than sitting on a bus especially if you needed a toilet stop.  Well I was unfortunate and we weren't able to land again so I ended up back in Brisbane for a few hours.  At least I was in civilisation and close to real coffee and real food (bet they weren't getting that on the bus!).

At 4 pm I boarded another flight especially for us stranded passengers of which there was 6 on board (hardly worth the effort really when there was another flight at 5.20pm) only to find that we still couldn't land in Roma.  We did eventually land at around 7.15pm and I think my stomach was a little worse for wear and I really needed some sleep.

Next morning came and I made my way out to work after being told conflicting stories about whether the road was open or not.  Once I hit the dirt, I mean mud road that I have to drive about 27klm on I realised that the road really should have been closed.  Probably really gave it away when my 4wd Hilux did a complete 360 and slid down a small embankment travelling at 20klm/h.  Thank heavens that I wasn't bogged and was able to reverse and continue on my journey safely.

So that was my little adventure side of the story, the next is the exciting part.  Last month we met a lovely couple, John and Lan.  Lan is Vietnamese and they are now supplying us with our gorgeous new range of lacquer-ware furnishings and hand woven rattan baskets sourced from Vietnam.

Their supplier in Vietnam employs more than 100 full time and 35,000 part time employees. Production commenced as a government initiative to eliminate hunger as famines were prevalent during John's in-laws life time.

The art of rattan weaving is taught by experienced weavers to those wishing to earn some supplementary income during less labour intensive crop growing times.

Their supplier, free issues rattan cane and bamboo to participating weavers teaches the necessary skills and purchases the completed items at an agreed price. As the weaver gains experience, they are encouraged to weave more complex products where they obtain higher income for their participation.

John has sourced items which are in his view works of art due to the attention to detail and complexity of the item. Occasionally one obtains a piece of woven rattan which presents as an exceptional item due to the skill of the weaver. These particular items one would hope are treasured by the recipient, presuming they are not ignorant of the skills and diligence of the weaver. Each piece will vary dependant on the skill of the craftsman. Occasionally one notes a signature written on the bamboo cane identifying the weaver.

John and Lan are privileged to have travelled widely in the remote north western provinces of Vietnam where woven rattan is used by many of the ethnic minority tribes which inhabit these regions. This rattan is coloured by its exposure to smoke from open fire cooking. These woven items are in great demand by tourists whom venture from the tourist trail and create significant interest by the ethnic people whom are happy to sell utensils to generate some extra cash.

Smoke affected discolouration is achieved by their supplier whom utilises a carbonizing boiler to obtain a similar appearance. The finished products are exposed to intense smoke to create a similar patina to the rattan used by ethnic minority people. Some items are dyed to achieve the desired colour. White natural rattan is prized by the Vietnamese due to its scarcity, this desire being contrary to current western demand where darker colours are more desired.

Although quantities of rattan arrive in Australia from various countries, little of the available products are of similar quality and strength when compared with that woven in Vietnam.

Lan's relatives participate in weaving rattan for their supplier and we are very proud to support them.  You will see more details below under New Product Ranges.

We had a suggestion by one of our readers in response to last months article on Cleaning Your Home Naturally that instead of using Hydrogen Peroxide as a natural spray for benchtops, you could use stabilised chlorine dioxide which destroys all bacteria within minutes and does not smell or harm your health (once in blood stream converts to salt and oxygen).  Thanks for your suggestion.

We are always open to suggestions, so please feel free to email us your feedback at info@scentualnrg.com.au

Wishing you health and happiness!

Duane

Are You Tired of Counting Sheep?

Are you tired of counting sheep?  Is lack of sleep giving you bags under your eyes?  Are you so sleep-deprived that the only way you can get through the morning is by drinking a triple espresso?  Not being able to sleep affects everyone at some point in their life and about 10% of the population suffer from insomnia that continues for six months or more. Many experts recommend that we get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night and whilst it is important to make sure that we get enough sleep, it is equally important that we get good quality sleep.

The body needs rest, the brain needs sleep…

Sleep is necessary to help our brain recover and recuperate from the day’s activities. We have different cycles of sleep to achieve this. These cycles are known as Rapid Eye Movement(REM) and non-REM (slow wave) sleep, and they are meant to occur in a specific order and for the right amount of time. If you are not getting enough sleep, or your sleep cycles are disturbed, then your brain is not getting enough time to rejuvenate and ‘reset’, and you are more likely to suffer some of the following:

• Poor concentration

• Poor memory

• Clumsiness/carelessness

• Low mood

• Irritability

• Fatigue

So what keeps us tossing and turning all night ??

Whilst there are many reasons for sleep disturbances, stress is the most common trigger. Researchers have found that there is often an increase in stress hormones (such as cortisol) in people who have sleeping problems. So if it takes you a while to nod off, or if you frequently wake during the night and cannot fall back to sleep, then it is essential to address your stress levels.

Natural therapies may be the answer to help you sleep

The benefits of using natural therapies for sleep maintenance are that they are not addictive like some medications and won’t leave you feeling groggy in the morning. Even more importantly, natural medicines can help address the underlying causes of poor sleep such as nutritional deficiencies and stress.  Other nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, and iron are also important for good sleep. A deficiency in these minerals can lead to insomnia.

Tips for a better night’s sleep…

As well as herbs and natural supplements, these handy hints can also help you get a better night’s sleep:

• Get regular exercise (avoid exercising two hours before bed)

• Eliminate stimulants such as caffeine and sugar (even reducing them during the day may help)

• Try to go to bed around the same time each night

• Create a dark sleeping environment

• Limit alcohol consumption

• Use the bed and bedroom only for sleep and intimacy with your partner

• If you can’t sleep, try not to focus too hard on getting to sleep as this creates stress and can perpetuate the situation.

Fusion Health Stress and Anxiety provides a synergistic combination of Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs to assist in the management of stress disorders, reduce anxiety, improve stress resistance, promote tranquility, conserve energy and enhance mental function.  Fusion Health Sleep Tonic provides pharmacologically and traditionally evidenced hypnotic, sedative and nerve relaxant effects to relieve symptoms of insomnia and poor quality sleep.  Fusion Health Sleep Tonic is non-addictive and can be combined with Stress and Anxiety for maximum benefit.

The Scentual NRG Grounding Oil and Slumber Oil may also be beneficial as they both contain Vetiver Essential Oil which is great for helping to switch the mind off when it's racing.  If you lay in bed at night and can't help but think about everything, the body won't be able to relax so that you can fall asleep.  Both of these essential oil blends help you to relax and promote a good nights sleep.

Energy Massage and Beauty also have a range of Memory Foam Pillows in stock now as well as the Endura Sport range of Magnesium Supplements to compliment the Magnesium Transdermal Spray.

Testimonial:

I have been in nursing for the past 30 years and over the past couple of years have been on many different medications for a high blood pressure problem.  My GP was suprised on my last visit as my blood pressure has now stabilised to that of an 18 year olds.  The only thing I have changed is over the past month I have been using the Transdermal Magnesium Spray and taking the Fusion Health supplements and I am now sleeping through the night as well.  I used to have trouble falling asleep and I would wake feeling tired but now I'm feeling so much more rested.
