Hello Friends,

We hope that you all had a really wonderful Christmas and New Year and allowed yourself some time to sit, relax and reflect on the year passed.  The past year has been a very busy and exciting year for both David and myself.  Settling into the new clinic, employing staff, my part-time job at the mines, conferences, travel, staff changes, more work work work!  It has also been a very rewarding past year, with many new clients, getting to know our existing clients better, new products, new services and many challenges that forced us to grow both personally and preofessionally.

In early December we were fortunate enough to be able to bring John Kerr from Springfields Aromatherapy to the Gold Coast for a one-off seminar.  The seminar was based on John's personal experience in conducting trials in the Renal Unit of Westmead Hospital in Sydney assisting in Wound Healing using Essential Oils.  The seminar was a sell-out success and the feedback has all been extremely positive.

This year we were a little more prepared for Christmas and held a Personalised Shopping Night which included champagne, nibblies and discounts on products for those that attended.  Another successful night and great opportunity for us to spend quality time with some of our clients and friends.

I went back to my job at the mines in early December and arrived home Christmas Eve in time to do a spot of Christmas shopping and enjoy reading all our lovely christmas wishes from those who kindly sent Christmas cards.  It was one of the highlights of Christmas morning as I hadn't really enjoyed the Christmas spirit due to being away working.  David and I took a much needed 4 days off over the Christmas and Boxing Day weekend and then again the following weekend.  New Years Eve was spent enjoying Cirque Du Soliel Dralion and a meal at a nice little Chinese restaurant in West End with our good friend Toni.  On New Years the very sad news of my Grandfather's passing also came.  Although we knew it was coming, you can't really prepare for the emotion of losing someone you were so fond of and the realisation that you will no longer have them to call or see when you next visit.  Thank you Pop for all those wonderful memories that fill my thoughts and will continue to for the rest of my life!

The following days were kept very busy, painting a feature wall, socialising with great friends, travelling out to Wivenhoe Dam for a picnic lunch followed by catching up with another friend from Townsville and again enjoying a nice meal in West End.

Today, sees us back at work to start all over again!  A new year and a new beginning!  This year is going to be as exciting if not more exciting than the past.  Some of you may remember Maria who joined us in our Student Massage Clinic earlier in the year.  Maria completed her Diploma of Remedial Massage in December and will start working with us as of Monday 5th January as our new Remedial Massage Therapist and Chinese Cupping Practitioner (Health Fund Receipts Available).  Crystal joins our team on Wednesday 14th January as our new Aromatherapist and Massage Practitioner.  Crystal will be providing Personal Aromatherapy Consultations, Bio-Balance and Aromatherapy Massage (Health Fund Receipts Available) and Aromatherapy Facials.  Jasmine will continue to offer Beauty Services and Swedish Massage.

So we will take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year and we hope to see you or hear from you soon.

Wishing you health and happiness!

Duane

Brain Health

Building a better brain

Would you like to optimise your memory and cognitive function?  Would you like to support your brain function?  Maintaining a healthy mind and active brain throughout our entire life is something we all want. Fortunately, it is something we can all achieve.

Many people’s greatest fear is not death, but losing their mind

Many of us fear losing our memory and our mental function. Tragically, a large number of us will experience this personally or through a close relative or partner. The incidence of dementia in the elderly is increasing rapidly due to a combination of increased stress, increased oxidative exposure and nutrient insufficiencies.

Brain health throughout life

The health of the brain determines much of our experience of life, influencing our moods, our intelligence and our overall quality of life. Maintaining brain health  throughout life should therefore be a top priority for all of us. You need to consider the constant changing requirements of your brain in order to achieve a life time of healthy mental function. In order to address all the challenges and changes your brain experiences throughout life, it is important to incorporate good dietary  choices, key natural medicines and both physical and mental exercise. This will help to promote a healthy brain and mind.

Six keys to a healthy brain:

1. Exercise and challenge your brain.

2. Nourish your brain through good nutrition.

3. Enjoy physical activity.

4. Stress management.

5. Sleep well.

6. Take natural supplements.

1. Strain the brain to train the brain

The more you think, the smarter you become. Your brain is just like your body, the more you exercise it the more powerful it becomes. You can train your brain by

choosing appealing and challenging leisure activities (e.g. crosswords, puzzles, learning a new language, etc) and by challenging yourself at work.

2. Eat your way to a better brain

Take a healthy approach to your diet and lifestyle by eating the following each day:

• Protein rich foods.

• A minimum of 3 cups of fresh vegetables.

• Two pieces of fresh fruit.

• A handful of nuts and seeds.

• Two tablespoons of good oils.

• Drinking at least 8 glasses of water.

• Enjoy regular exercise and fun.

By following a healthy diet and lifestyle program you can provide key nutrients for healthy brain function.

3. Exercise builds better brain health

Sustained participation in physical exercise well into old age has been shown to:

• Enhance learning and memory.

• Reduce age and disease related mental decline.

• Protect against age-related degeneration of crucial areas of the brain associated with higher cognitive function.  Not only does exercise help to reduce the risk factors for cognitive decline, such as cardiovascular risk, inflammation and energy metabolism, it also helps to enhance learning and memory.

4. When life becomes stressful, what do you do?

Do you relax, have a massage, meditate and strive towards a healthy balance between work and leisure? Or do you keep pushing yourself and not give your body and brain a break? Many people put work and stress before their own health and wellbeing.  Ensuring that you take time out to relax is extremely important for brain health, because excessive stress can impair memory and brain function.

5. Are you counting sheep in order to sleep?

The most common reason people have difficulty getting to sleep is that they are unable to shut off the anxieties and worries of the day and are preparing for  tomorrow’s problems. Sleep is important for repair of both body and mind. If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to us today about what natural options we can offer you for better sleep.  Grounding Energy Oil contains Vetiver Essential Oil which is fantastic for helping the mind to switch off.  It is like an earthwire that allows your mind to relax and reach that space you need in order to fall asleep.  It is also very beneficial if you race through life doing everything but not actually achieving anything.  It allows you to ground yourself and concentrate on one thing at a time.  Fusion Health 'Sleep' calms the mind and clears the senses to assist in falling asleep and improving quality of sleep in poor or irregular sleepers.

6. Nutrients to nourish the brain

A multivitamin and mineral supplement is the best way to provide vital nutrients for brain function. Vitamins and minerals improve energy, support metabolism and nervous system function and promote better brain function.    Fusion Health Multi Vitamin and Mineral Advanced is a high potency, advanced vitamin and mineral formula with Selenium, antioxidants and other nutritional co-factors including amino acids, lycopene, lutein and trace minerals to support good health and promote healthy ageing.  Omega 3 essential fatty acids from fish oil are also extremely important for your brain. Studies have shown that DHA, one of the major components of fish oil, improves cognitive function.  This component has also been shown to be very effective for protection against age-related mental decline.  Finally, brain tissue is extremely vulnerable to damage by free radicals. Replenishing the brain with antioxidants is therefore a great idea to help reduce the damaging effects of oxidative stress and aid in the prevention of age-associated memory impairment. Great antioxidants to help support healthy brain function include resveratrol, vitamin C and vitamin E.
